I don’t quite remember how Uchiyama Roshi’s treasure of a book, “Opening the Hand of Thought,” came to me. I think it was a friend of his who sent me a copy shortly after the revised edition was published. I had heard about Uchiyama Roshi, heard he was a plain rice roshi, someone who valued “just sitting,” shikantaza. I was interested to read his book….maybe more than interested. I had been sitting since the midsixties. It was time to begin again.

Another thing that got my attention was Uchiyama’s disinterest in over-the-top liturgy. Over the years, I had been exposed to an excess of beautiful liturgy, but found myself returning again and again to the cushion, not as a refuge, not as a place to hide out, nor as a therapy office, or an experience about getting enlightened, but just to sit, plain rice sitting. No sauce. No gravy. Just sitting.

So here was a plain rice roshi who spoke about the heart of practice, and made me (and others) want to practice… just plain rice practice.

And lucky for me, later, after reading “Opening the Hand of Thought,” one of his students became one of my students, and so I had a little inside look at Roshi’s life, and most particularly his final days.

On the first read of “Opening the Hand…,” I felt that Roshi had captured my experience of not only zazen but also of life with words that were transparent, rendering reality accessible. He was sometimes humorous, sometimes heartbreaking, and always wise. He also was unrelenting, and encouraged unrelenting zazen. And he made it clear that practice starts right where we are, and where we are, year after year, for ten, twenty, thirty years. Through him and this wonderful book, I came to see that zazen was not a passing fancy but all of life, and full of life. Life is strange 2 complete season download. Oh, and one more thing, Uchiyama was an origami master. I got that reading his book. I also got it with legs folded and sitting. His book is like origami, a flat piece of paper, becomes whatever shape reality is. For me, it was legs folded, just sitting.
